Syntonic is a double bass and Sax duo with Sue McKenzie. Sue plays baritone and soprano sax, so some tunes are bass deep and dirty, whilst others have an incredible breadth of range, the bass pinning the low end whilst the soprano soars way up there. The music that comes from these two women encompasses their shared backgrounds in classical music (Sue also studied at RCM), South American music and jazz, but are all rendered with a unique combination of feminine bolshiness and tenderness.
Syntonic's debut performance at Classical Kicks back in January 2015 was a great success. The duo followed this with the launch of their Bitches Brew night, which was featured on BBC Radio 3's Jazz on Three and has been met with great acclaim.
With Bitches Brew going from strength to strength, the duo have proved themselves as curators of the highest order and continue to push their own musical boundaries with each performance.
They are excited about launching Bitches Brew in Glasgow at the Glasgow International Jazz Festival, and equally excited to have their own gig there on the 24th June. This will gig will allow them to spread their wings and the duo are currently writing new music for the occasion. Performances at the Click Clack Club and at the World Wide Music Day event will give the pair a chance to air their new ideas before the Jazz Festival performance. Come and see them at their rawest, in these smaller intimate settings, or wait for the Festival gig, where they will be on form and on fire.
